Charleston County’s 6th Annual Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival at Waterfront Memorial Park in Mount Pleasant
The Sixth Annual Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival will take place at Waterfront Memorial Park, across the harbor from downtown Charleston, in Mount Pleasant on Saturday, June 5th, 2010 from 10:00am - 5:00pm.
The highly anticipated Sweetgrass Festival will celebrate the rich Gullah Geechee cultural heritage and provides the most extensive showcase of sweetgrass baskets in the Lowcountry area. This year’s event features an assortment of unique handmade arts & crafts, paintings, live performances, and documentary films. Festival-goers will enjoy two days filled with entertainment that includes gospel songs and praise dance, storytelling and Gullah Geechee skits, basket-making demonstrations and the Adande African Drummers and Dancers. Visitors will be treated to a variety of authentic Gullah cuisine, classic barbeque, fish, chicken and beverages offered for sale by more than 15 Lowcountry restaurants and food vendors. Publications on Lowcountry Gullah Geechee history, fiction, and cookbooks can also be purchased on-site. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage in hands on basket making demonstrations and enter the drawings for a chance to win beautiful sweetgrass baskets.
This is a family event. Admission and parking are free. No alcohol will be sold. The location is Mount Pleasant’s Waterfront Memorial Park, just across the new Mount Pleasant Bridge from Charleston, on Saturday June 5th from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
