The Downtown Charleston Neighborhoods: Eastside and Westside

The Charleston Market is downtown's hub on the weekends. Vendors set up tables along the open-air market and sell a variety of clothes, apparel, and art. The market's location is just a couple blocks from the ocean and Charleston Waterfront Park.

Eastside

Like the Ansonborough neighborhood once had, Charleston’s Eastside Neighborhood has gradually declined from one of the finest residential areas in anti-bellum Charleston, to a point where tenements and slums have began to predominate. But also like the Ansonborough Neighborhood, the Eastside Neighborhood has started to make a comeback as a neighborhood in transition.

Eastside is bounded on the north by the South side of Harris Street, to the South side of Jackson Street, to the South side of Lee Street and on the south side by the North side of Chapel Street, to the North on America Street, to the North side of Mary Street. The eastern boundary is the West side of East Bay Street and the western boundary is the East side of Meeting Street.

Westside

Charleston’s Westside neighborhood is predominantly a residential community in transition. There are many renovations and a few new constructions ongoing at all times. The Westside community is a very diverse community with college students, professors, medical professionals, workers in diverse fields of employment along with life long residents.

Westside neighborhood is bounded on the north by boundary is the South side of Congress Street and on the south by the North side of Highway 17, to North on President Street, to West on Line Street, to South and Hagood Avenue, to North side of Spring Street. The eastern boundary is the West side of I-26 and the western boundary is Lockwood Avenue, to fishburne Avenue, to Hagood Avenue.
