Charleston’s Carifest 2010 Schedule of Events
June 17 – 19 the Charleston CariFest 2010 celebrates Caribbean American Heritage Month with a series of special events. The featured country this year is Barbados.
Thursday June 17, the CariFest Symposium touches on the "Jewish-Caribbean connection" from 6-9 p.m. at Arnold Hall on the College of Charleston campus.
Friday June 18, the Masquerade Fete event features a Mardi Gras-style party at the The International Longshoreman's Hall on Morrison Drive in Charleston, with a dinner/dance fundraiser in support of the CariFest Children's Steel Band Project.
A Caribbean Carnival Street Parade kicks off at midday on Sat. June 19 with masqueraders marching from the Visitor's Center on Ann Street in downtown Charleston The parade route is: Visitor's Center on Ann Street to King Street to Carolina Street across Rutledge to Fishburne into Brittle Bank Park on Lockwood Avenue above the Crosstown in Charleston SC. View the splendor of the Caribbean with colorful Revelers in beautiful costumes dancing to the beat of Reggae and Soca music through the streets on their way to Brittle Bank Park. "Playing Mas" Caribbean style.
There will be a variety of steel bands, reggae/soca music, Caribbean dancers, Indian dancers, food, drink, children's activities, and crafts; hours are 2:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
The CariFest after-party takes place on Sat. June 19 at 10 p.m. at the Tropix Bar & Grill (1531 Dorchester Road) in North Charleston.
